Atomic-scale disproportionation in amorphous silicon monoxide

چکیده
Solid silicon monoxide is an amorphous material which has been commercialized for many functional applications. However, the amorphous structure of silicon monoxide is a long-standing question because of the uncommon valence state of silicon in the oxide. It has been deduced that amorphous silicon monoxide undergoes an unusual disproportionation by forming silicon- and silicon-dioxide-like regions. Nevertheless, the direct experimental observation is still missing. Here we report the amorphous structure characterized by angstrom-beam electron diffraction, supplemented by synchrotron X-ray scattering and computer simulations. In addition to the theoretically predicted amorphous silicon and silicon-dioxide clusters, suboxide-type tetrahedral coordinates are detected by angstrom-beam electron diffraction at silicon/silicon-dioxide interfaces, which provides compelling experimental evidence on the atomic-scale disproportionation of amorphous silicon monoxide. Eventually we develop a heterostructure model of the disproportionated silicon monoxide which well explains the distinctive structure and properties of the amorphous material.

CVD synthesis and purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes on aerogel-supported catalyst
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were synthesized by disproportionation of carbon monoxide on an aerogel-supported Fe/Mo catalyst. A simple acidic treatment followed by an oxidation process produced a high purity (> 99%) of SWNTs. The nanotubes obtained are bundled SWNTs and free of amorphous-carbon coating. Several factors that affect the yield and the quality of the SWNTs were also stud...
متن کاملA Model for Filament Growth and Switching in Amorphous Oxide Films
The forming process, by which changes are brought about in the electronic conduction of thin films of various binary amorphous oxides and halides, is first described, and experimental evidence is put forward which contradicts an earlier theory of the forming process in gold-silicon monoxide-metal structures. A theory is developed, in terms of the growth and thermal rupture of many conducting fi...
متن کاملThe ultrasmoothness of diamond-like carbon surfaces.
The ultrasmoothness of diamond-like carbon coatings is explained by an atomistic/continuum multiscale model. At the atomic scale, carbon ion impacts induce downhill currents in the top layer of a growing film. At the continuum scale, these currents cause a rapid smoothing of initially rough substrates by erosion of hills into neighboring hollows. The predicted surface evolution is in excellent ...

Nanocrystalline fluorinated silicon films are studied by using Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, nonlinear laser spectroscopy, and photoluminescence. Electrical properties of nanocrystalline silicon and amorphous silicon films were compared. The field-assisted migration of point defects is dramatic for durabi...
متن کاملSilicon monoxide--a convenient precursor for large scale synthesis of near infrared emitting monodisperse silicon nanocrystals.
While silicon nanocrystals (ncSi) embedded in silicon dioxide thin films have been intensively studied in physics, the potential of batch synthesis of silicon nanocrystals from the solid-state disproportionation of SiO powder has not drawn much attention in chemistry. Herein we describe some remarkable effects observed in the diffraction, microscopy and spectroscopy of SiO powder upon thermal p...
